Understanding Breast Cancer Facts

Welcome to Everything Breast Cancer.com. This site was designed specifically to provide breast cancer facts. Maybe some of you will understand when I say I've been on a mission to find out more about breast cancer. Recently someone I know was diagnosed with breast cancer. The initial shock gave way and a need to uncover as many breast cancer facts as possible emerged. Volumes of information revealed what she would be facing. I realized that no matter how much I read, I would not truly understand her journey.

Thank God, I don't have breast cancer.

But the harsh reality remains, she does.

So I kept (and continue today) reading.

What I discovered in all of my reading was how damn little I actually knew about breast cancer. I just didn't have the breast cancer facts. Does this sound at all familiar?

I am a two-time graduate from a major university, working at a multi-billion dollar food company. Some might say that I'm a pretty smart "chick." I can tell you this: I thought I knew about breast cancer and about the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I have seen the pink ribbons everywhere, read about the walks and marathons in honor of "the Cure." I knew that I should (but didn't until now) check my breasts monthly. At the moment that breast cancer struck someone I knew, two things became painfully clear: 1. My lack of understanding, "what is breast cancer?", and 2. Where do I get the information? Where are the breast cancer facts?

Does any of this sound like you?? Perhaps you think you know or thought you knew until you really started reading. Read on and make sure you do.

Along with basic breast cancer facts, included on this site are links to reputable websites that provide more detailed information about other aspects of breast cancer that are beyond my scope of understanding such as treatments, chemotherapy drugs, current research, and emerging technologies.

Please note that I am NOT a doctor or health care professional. None of the information on this website or any of the sites you might be directed to is intended in any way, shape or form to diagnose breast cancer or replace the guidance and direction of a doctor. If you have concerns about breast cancer, PLEASE DON'T DELAY - GET TO A DOCTOR.

The mission of this website and all the efforts around it are to support what we call 4E: to Encourage Every woman to Examine her breasts for breast cancer Every month. We hope that by reading and gathering facts about breast cancer, you might be motivated to practice critical screening and early detection techniques. If you are already doing that, GREAT!

In a woman's lifetime, she (anyone of us) has a 1 in 8 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer; how serious is that!! After talking with my friends... the reality that their knowledge was about as pathetic as my own reared its ugly head. They didn't really know about breast cancer either.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY DETECTION IN FIGHTING BREAST CANCER CANNOT BE STATED LOUD ENOUGH NOR OFTEN ENOUGH!!!!

Consider it this way. Look around yourself and you will see a niece, a daughter, a cousin, high school girls with their whole lives in front of them and not a care in the world. Some of them are at high risk for breast cancer because their mom has breast cancer. Some of them will not know anyone who has breast cancer, and thus may not understand the seriousness of the situation until it is too late. What if we could further increase awareness about breast cancer even more, what if we could detect it earlier with better methods, what if we could make treatments routine and know that women would not only survive, but thrive? What if every woman had the facts about breast cancer? What if these young women understood what you may or may not understand: breast cancer is the second leading cancer killer of women.

Until the Susan G. Komen Foundation or some other organization finds the cure... early detection of breast cancer remains the #1 factor improving the chances of survival!

Doing nothing after all that I have read was not an option. Something more needed to be done. There is an overwhelming feeling that whatever I might do to help this women, it isn't enough. She's fighting for her life...

So I developed this site for 2 reasons:

1. To help inform you and as many women that this site may reach about the breast cancer facts and the impact that early detection has on survival

2. To financially support efforts in research around early detection, breast cancer education programs, and efforts to find the cure.
